Choosing a Duvet
November 1, 2011
Duvets should be a major part of making your bedroom look fantastic, and make you feel luxurious as well as well. The right quality duvet will provide style, durability, warmth and comfort at a price that you can afford.
Here are four essential factors in choosing a duvet:
1. Be Clear About What Duvet You Want
Before you begin think about size and colour. You may want to measure your bed to get an accurate idea of size. The right duvet will cover the entire mattress and a little bit more. However be careful not to choose one so large that it drapes down and over the floor – this will look messy.
Next take a good long look at your bedroom and think about what kind of impression you are trying to create. A duvet is often one of the largest objects in a bedroom and therefore can have a high visual impact changing the room completely. A change of colour or texture can change not just the duvet but the whole room.
2. Know Your Duvet Price
The range of duvets on offer is quite simply vast. You can easily be overwhelmed by so much choice unless you start with a clear budget. Even when you are shopping on a budget you can find some very good duvets at very affordable prices. You might also be able to get a deal like an all seasons duvet which is effectively two duvets held together. Split them apart and you have three separate warmth choices for summer, autumn, winter and spring.
3. Duvets and Thread Count
OK so this is not very nice but just about every bed has bed bugs. Most of them are pretty harmless but some will affect you if you suffer from allergies. The thread count tells you how many threads are in one square inch of the duvet. The higher the thread count, the softer the material, but also the harder it is for bed bugs to get inside. Typically duvets have a thread count of somewhere between 200 and 400, it is best to choose a thread count of at least 250 or more.
4. Choosing A Quality Material
The best filling is warm, comfortable and also washable as well. Filllings can be cotton, wool, or at the top of the range, siberian goose down. For those with allergies, man made materials are available that are hypoallergenic. Duvet covers can be made from silk, cotton, or polyester. Of these choices, silk is usually the most luxurious to the touch and the most expensive. However silk is not in everyones price range; cotton on the other hand is much easier to clean and very durable.
